Perched on the slopes of Mount Carmel, overlooking Israel's Mediterranean coast an hour from Tel Aviv, the port city of Haifa is the third largest city in Israel and the major city in the north of the country.

Home to Jews, Christians, and Muslims, and the world center of the Baha’i faith, Haifa is a model of peaceful coexistence among its communities.

This cultural and linguistic diversity is replicated in the student body of The University of Haifa, numbering 17,000 students.

The university is adjacent to a large national park, overlooking the bay and the beach. It is comprised of six faculties and five schools, and embraces the link between academic excellence and social responsibility as its credo.

Campus attractions include the Hecht Museum, specializing in archeology, and housing a wing devoted to a 2,400 year old boat discovered near the Sea of Galilee.  The campus is also home to the largest IBM research center outside the United States.

Linguistics and language sciences are taught in several departments across faculties, and the Humanities Faculty hosts the only Sign Language Research Lab in Israel.

General Information

Banks and Foreign Exchange

ATMs (automatic teller machines) are widely available in the city and regional areas. As in most countries when travelling abroad, ATMs will charge a small fee for cash withdrawal. The University has ATMs located near the Sports Club at the bottom of the Stairs Building and near the main entrance to the university, next to the Eshkol Tower.

Most debit and credit cards can be used when in Israel either to withdraw cash or pay for goods/services; however, it’s always a good idea to inform your bank of your plans to travel to avoid blocking your card use due to suspected fraudulent activity.

Foreign currency exchange bureaus are also available at the airport and in the main areas of Haifa.

Climate

Haifa’s top temperatures are usually in July and August, with an average daily temperature of 30 degrees Celsius and high humidity in much of the country. In September, the weather begins to be more pleasant.

In Israel, the sun is stronger than it seems, so be sure to bring sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses, and keep well hydrated.  The University along with most hotels, recreational centers and shops will have air conditioning. It is also worth carrying a long-sleeved top with you at all times as the difference between the outdoor temperatures and the air conditioning indoors (including on the train) can create the need for more layers.

Currency

Currency units in Israel are Shekels (NIS - New Israeli Shekel) and Agorot (1/100th of Shekels). Shekels come in notes of: 200, 100, 50, and 20. Shekel coins are: 10, 5, 2, and 1, and Agorot coins are 50 Agorot (1/2 shekel) and 10 Agorot.

Official exchange rates are published in the Bank of Israel website:
